Jessica Cosmetics Gold Leaf Luxe 18k Topcoat

I was not going to buy any of the gold leaf topcoat polishes that have been released lately. I made my own awhile back and did not like it at all. It was too crude and clunky on the nail. I also think they are easy to make for a fraction of the cost. The only issue I see with making your own is that gold leaf is fussy to work with and it is time consuming to get the pieces shredded finely. It can also turn green depending on the base used. Pain in the butt overall.

Having said that, I am enjoying the Jessica 18k Gold Leaf polish. It's easy to work with and the pieces are finer and it's much more refined compared to my franken. This was sent for review and I honestly don't think I would have purchased it unless I found it for cheap because this is an expensive splurge but I am enjoying it now that I have it. It does dry to a satin finish but topcoat makes it shiny again.

One coat over Jessica Notorious which is a brown based vampy red shimmer. There is something so lush about red and gold together.

One coat over a greenish turquoise franken that I made that is awful. Don't mind the creases and ridges - those are all from the base color.

Picture Polish Pshiit

I'm not really sure how to pronounce the name of this polish. I believe it is a sound but my mind translates the word into "shit". Awful but true. Pshiit is a teal/blue/green shimmer with subtle little flakes. I love the base color but the flakes are very subtle and really only show in bright light. In lower light the flakes look, to my eye, like little imperfections in the polish application. The formula is a bit on the thin side but application was very easy. I'm very lukewarm about the polish as a whole which is weird because it is a beautiful polish. I think I was hoping that the flake aspect would have been more obvious.

Revlon Street Wear Silver Locket

Another oldie from the Revlon Street Wear line. They had some cool stuff. This has round large glitter/flake pieces that are a combination of blue, green, copper and gold. The only modern polish that is close to this that I can think of is Hard Candy Break Up but it (from memory) doesn't have the blue/green aspect.

This needs thinner. Badly. Please pardon the tip wear!

Deborah Lippmann Ray of Light

I like copper polishes and I really like blue and copper together so Ray of Light caught my interest real fast when I read/heard about it. I purchased this from HSN.com and I've never bought from there but I had a coupon code (C11289 for free shipping and/or C11533 for $5 off $25 or more) and I went through Mr. Rebates for a refund so I paid below retail. I'm glad I did because I can't say that I love it even though the color combination is one of my favorites. The formula isn't what I expect from Deborah Lippmann polishes. It's a bit gummy and thick and I know thinner will help that issue but I don't think I should have to tinker with a brand new polish especially one in this price range.

I find the flakes to be a pinkish copper and would have preferred a pure copper but that is a personal thing. They do have a subtle duochrome quality where the flakes shift to green at certain angles which is sweet. I'm a bit on the fence on this one. I though I would love it the minute I put it on but I only like it and I have this urge to tweak it. Maybe if the base was a bit lighter so the flakes showed better? I am looking forward to dupes of this color coming out. Hopefully some USA drugstore flake polishes will be seen in the very near future. That would be awesome!

UP Colors Flocado in Carnaval

I like flake polishes and I should since I have a larger amount of them. I'm a sucker for "effect" polishes that I can layer over other colors. I just can't get enough of them. UP Colors Flocado/Flake in Carnaval has a sheer brown base (more of a tint actually) with green, orange and yellow flakes and the green flakes have a blue flash. I love the square bottles of the UP Colors and I had no issue with the formula. I can't say any of the flake polishes are unique but they are fun.

This is one coat over China Glaze Mahogany Magic.

Inglot 203 and 204

The only drawback to Inglot's flake polishes are that they are $10 for an 8ml bottle. The plus is that they are really nice. They have a wonderful formula - dense and smooth. I approve! You can get Inglot from their stores and online. I started with Essie Go Overboard and put Inglot 203 (blue/green) over that and Inglot 204 (violet) over that. It reminds me of an Earth marble.

Barielle Buddha-ful

I wanted something nude but not boring. I decided on Buddha-ful. It makes my nails look like they are covered in subtle gift wrapping. It also allows the staining to show through - ew!
